Installing this new stainless steel door in a residential home has boosted the sense of security for the homeowner and helped to create an upgrade to the usual security cameras and outside lighting. The back door is often the 'Achilles heel' in any home and many unwanted guests will choose the back door or back kitchen window as a point of unauthorised entry as it is often out of sight.

So what makes a stainless steel back door safer? Many ordinary UPVC back doors feature a thin panel which is held in place by 4 plastic trims. Many burglars can simply kick the panel and climb through into the house. Another method involves using a 'flatbar' tool to prise the UPVC away from the frame and gain entry in less than 90 seconds. Cross Builders selected a welded stainless steel frame that features welded joints.

This door is not just about strength and security: finished in an attractive anthracite grey it is stylish and compliments most modern building styles.

But what about insulation values? This security door is different to the usual offerings: the structure of the door is packed with insulation and the seals ensure a draft free fit. It's quieter too. The frame and thicker door profile help to make external noises significantly quieter. The frame gap is significantly deeper and narrower than mainstream doors so it is more difficult for an intruder to insert a 'flatbar' tool to prise the door open. The thicker frame and door profile make for greater strength too.

The cylindrical stainless steel locking bolts are manufactured by Cetiosaurus and are thicker and more difficult to cut through than mainstream multi-point locking bolts.

Burglars can often gain access to a house by simply removing the externally fitted plastic glazing beads, lifting out the glass or fixed panel and climbing into your home.

With this stainless steel door however, each of the toughened glazing panels are pre-installed into the door at the factory and secured into recessed horizontal steel mullions with an adhesive seal; even if the seal is cut, the toughened glazed panel cannot be removed as it set into the stainless steel framework.

Cross Builders used a Cobalt drill to drill into the frame as part of the installation process as standard HSS drills simply could not cut into the steel. The installers then used a resin applied to the wall to securely bed the frame into the wall. Styrene Benzol Peroxide resin sets in about 20 minutes and helps to provide additional strength along with hardened Reisser 120mm screws into surrounding brickwork.

As the door and frame is much thicker than standard UK doors, Cross Builders had to cut a 70mm strip around the interior to make room for the chunky structure.

Other security options were offered: a fingerprint scanner lock is available and recessed hinges but these options do add to the overall cost of £1900 plus fitting.
